"Budget Cuts"

posted 18 Sep 2010, 09:05 by disabilityactionwf
Dear Mr Lawley,
Thank you very much indeed for your e-mail, voicing your concerns over the possible budget cuts. As you know, we are all waiting for the comprehensive spending review to be published on the 20th October, and on that date we will all be in a far better position to be able to ascertain exactly how people will be affected by the budget cuts.
There is a great deal of concern about all this and your group is not the first, and will certainly not be the last, to contact me regarding fears of how these cuts will affect every member of the community.
With regard you request that I sign the EDM, a number of us have opted to avoid EDMs. This in no way reflects my opinion of one EDM over another, merely that EDMs in general are becoming a very devalued currency in Westminster. Whilst yours is a serious issue, many are of a trivial nature.
However, my position on the Treasury Select Committee puts me in an unusually influential position to be able to take your representations to a very high and public forum. The role of the TSC is to scrutinise the work of the government and ensure that it is fair and just in the context of the work of the Treasury. Since the budget cuts originate from the Treasury, I will use my position to ensure that the interests of disabled people (as well as a number of other vulnerable groups) are aired in this forum. The TSC is currently meeting twice weekly and I can assure you that the CSR will very much be the focus of our attentions in late October.
I hope this gives you some confidence that your concerns will be aired in the right place, and you can be assured of my support.
With very best wishes,
